Hello.
I am new to the software and using a template while I learn. I am having the hardest time getting the triggers to work. I have reviewed videos and tutorials and tried to follow step by step, but I cannot seem to get them to work. Any tips, tricks, or insight as to how to do these using a template would be appreciated.

Are you using one of the templates from the Content Library, or did you download it from a different resource?
This is a personal opinion, but it might be easier to learn triggers with a blank project than trying to adjust the ones that already exist on another file. I'd start with this article:
