I have several markers on one slide, and each one has a Visited state (to turn green) when the user hovers over them and some associated audio has finished playing - this currently works fine. ...

FYI: The built-in states come with built-in functionality. For example, as Phil pointed out, an object with a Visited state will automatically change to Visited when clicked. An object with a Hover state will automatically show that state on mouse over.
You can often save time programming by relying on the built-in functionality. And you can save yourself headaches by knowing when you need to avoid it.
