Overlapping checkboxes

Hoping someone can help me with this - I'm sure the solution is easy, I just can't figure it out!

I'm using checkboxes for the learner to select a rating on something. (They're doing several ratings on the same slide, so it's not a question slide, just checkboxes on a content slide.) First screenshot is how it looks to the learner. However, I can't make the boxes that hold the checkboxes any narrower, so they're overlapping - see second screenshot. This causes the user to be unable to select what they want to.

Help?
