Let's talk aspect

Hey folks,

I am just gathering my thoughts regarding aspect ratios. I was watching a great video about designing templates and one of the first things the person did was swap the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9.

I currently and purposefully keep to the old school 4:3 aspect ratio. My rationale is that many learners view my e-learning content on a phone, but not many learners like to turn their phones sideways. So 16:9 is too small to view on a portrait phone IMHO.

But of course, I have to cater for the learners on a desktop/laptop which typically is 16:9. Having said that, many laptops are adopting the 16:10 ratio. So I stick with 4:3 because it looks good on both.

Are there any thoughts out there about what ratios you use and why? How do you cater for your audiences?

And are there any thoughts on a more fluid canvas approach in Storyline in the near future? 🤓

  • At this point, if you want a truly responsive course that adjusts everything based on someone's device and browser width, develop the course in Rise.

Unfortunately, Storyline (SL) slides can't responsively change their size. And I doubt that they will anytime in the near future.

For such fixed-aspect-ratio courses, my clients prefer 16:9, because it fits so well on laptops and horizontal phones, and looks good on tablets.  In other words: tough luck for those who don't like turning their phones sideways.

If I were using SL for an audience that was almost all virtual, I'd still use 16:9. But I'd turn it "sideways" and make that height:width (not width:height).
