Icons: Individual Shapes VS Grouped Shapes
I am struggling to understand, so I hope the community can help clarify.
Icons that are made up of a single, individual shape are able to change states (hover, visited, etc.)

Choose a single shape. Copy the second shape. Edit the first shape. Paste the second shape onto the Normal state. Now you have both shapes as one object which responds in all ways as a single-shape. Continue with additional shapes if necessary.
