Icons: Individual Shapes VS Grouped Shapes

I am struggling to understand, so I hope the community can help clarify.

Icons that are made up of a single, individual shape are able to change states (hover, visited, etc.)

Icons that are made up of multiple, grouped shapes are not.

What possible benefit is there to icons made of grouped shapes? The workarounds (export as a shape, hotspots) are all unsatisfactory as they do not quite mimic the formatting available for single-shape icons, making uniformity a struggle.

If there is some other workaround, I would be eager to hear about it.

If it is possible to request, it would be great to make all icons either single shapes with no grouping OR convertible into a single shape from a group.

OR! At least an indicator as to which of the icons are single and which ones are groups. Or a filter? Something.

  • Choose a single shape. Copy the second shape. Edit the first shape. Paste the second shape onto the Normal state. Now you have both shapes as one object which responds in all ways as a single-shape. Continue with additional shapes if necessary.

I am also hoping that Articulate will make all icons into single shapes (with no grouping). The workarounds are not as efficient.
