Thanks for sharing your project file to take a look at and understand what you were describing here.
It was a team effort, but the culprit was identified. Unfortunately, the trigger to display the Read layer was corrupted. This is why it was defying all other logic. If you delete this trigger and recreate it, your design works as intended.
An updated file is attached.
