Video with transparent background in Storyline 360
Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting a video clip with a transparent background into Storyline 360 and if so, what format did you use so that 360 maintains the transparency.
Thanks
Dave

A workaround is to make the background of the video the same as the Storyline slide. Then, import the video as normal and place it behind other objects occurring on the screen simultaneously.
It's not a perfect fix, but it's working for now.

Now that flash is no longer supported, does anyone know if there are any plans to support other formats (AVI, MOV) of videos with transparency?
Hi Andrew,
I appreciate you checking in! No news yet, but we are closely monitoring requests for transparent video support in a Flash-free world.
I'll absolutely notify you of any changes. Let me know if there's anything else I can do!

I'm evaluating Articulate 360 and was extremely disappointed to find this feature isn't supported. Quicktime MOV alpha channel support would be extremely helpful for some of projects I have in mind.

Here's a workaround I have developed to add transparent videos using JavaScript:

with one small limitation - Apple iOS does not play webm video format
for transparent video on iOS HEVC/H.265 should work (but still needs to be tested with the different ios versions)

Thanks for the heads up on the format. Should be able to use the same JavaScript approach to attach other formats. Follow this example of how to add multiple video formats within a single video tag. The browser will choose the first source it supports.

Now it is 2024 and this problem isn't solved. There are a lot of words from the staff ensuring that their customers are important for articulate. But fact is nothing happens. It was / is the same problem with svg images. Over years nothing happens. And til now using svg images is causing more trouble then benefit. All in all articulate is not possible to deal with formats that are common and up to date. It is erster to live in the past then support the own customers concerning valid complaints. Flashvideo as a solution to work with transparent video background in 2024 is really poor and disappointing. It seems to be more important to integrate AI support in Rise instead solving very old todos. Hey, articulate I hope your AI features are able to make the background of videos transparent. Kind regards

yes it is 2024 and Apple (Safari) prevents the use of a free and open video format that supports transparent video - they still do not support WebM VP8/VP9 format

Still waiting for the Quicktime MOV alpha channel transparency feature. Is there a reason why this has not been added, especially after flash was no longer supported? Users have been asking for this for over a decade now.

I'm going to have to chime in also and express my disgust that it's been 7 years and Articulate has clearly ignored this request. They tell us to post suggestions and requests for features and capabilities, yet apparently, they get completely ignored and never put on the development schedule. With as big this company is and as much money as this company makes, I find it hard to believe there isn't enough staff and development hours that can be dedicated to this request.
I too have a need to import transparent background videos using Vyond content, but Storyline won't import videos with transparent alpha channel. If after 7 years of requests and we still don't have it, I highly doubt we ever will.

See my recent post on a fairly easy approach to inserting transparent videos.
