Storyline 3 mp4 compression - cannot select 'none'

Hello,

I cannot check 'none' at video compression, it's set to automatic, despite I use x264 codec with main/baseline profile, just like the manual for storyline says:

You can turn off compression altogether for MP4 videos created with baseline, main, or high profiles. (All other videos will be compressed automatically.)

That's my compression parameteres:

--profile baseline --cabac --ref 3 --deblock 0:0 --partitions i4x4,i8x8,p8x8,b8x8 --me hex --subme 7 --psy-rd 1.00:0.00 --merange 16 --trellis 1 --8x8dct --cqm flat --deadzone-inter 21 --deadzone-intra 11 --chroma-qp-offset -2 --threads 12 --lookahead-threads 2 --bframes 3 --b-pyramid normal --b-adapt 1 --b-bias 0 --direct spatial --weightp 2 --keyint 90 --min-keyint 30 --scenecut 40 --rc-lookahead 40 --crf 20.0 --qcomp 0.60 --qpmin 5 --qpmax 51 --qpstep 5 --vbv-maxrate 3750 --vbv-bufsize 12500 --nal-hrd none --ipratio 1.40 --aq-mode 1 --aq-strength 1.00

what parameter does cause problem with storyline setting automatic by default?
My videos gets twice compressed, and storyline also produces larger  and worse looking video than my original (compressed by me) file.

  • Hi, everyone!

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 75, we’ve included important fixes and new features.

We've included a fix for this issue:

The video compression setting was disabled when it should have been active.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!

  • Hi, this has come up a bit on different threads. You might want to check out this one: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/video-compression-problems

What I can tell you is that there is a version of MP4 that, when imported into Storyline 3, does allow you to select 'none, for compression. I know this because I have done it. But I didn't create the videos and the person who did is on holiday, so I can't check what his settings were when he created them.

Yeah, now I have a fun part - I managed to get one file to be compression "none", while 5 others are still "automatic" by meddling with compression options.

Well, problem is, every of this file is compressed the same way! I really don't get it...
It's all an main 4.0 profile now.

  • Yes, it's frustrating! It would be great if we could get an updated list of what settings to use to get it to work every time.

  • Hi Mateusz,

Thanks for reaching out and letting us know your settings as well as the difference that you are seeing with similar files.

I'd like for our support team to take a closer look, so I've opened a support case on your behalf.

You should be hearing from someone via e-mail soon.

This issue is at least 4 years old.  I'm using Camtasia and rendering all videos with a Baseline profile and identical settings. Storyline allows some of them to have a 'none' compression setting and other are forced into automatic.  It seems completely random.

Ray, I just swap the storyline-compressed files to my files in output files. You just need to copy-paste output names of the videos. At least some workaround. Not quite good if you have really big number of videos tho.

  • Hi Ray,

We are looking into an issue in both Storyline 3 and Storyline 360 where videos encoded with a Baseline profile are not allowing users access to the compression field in Storyline.

I've added this conversation to the report so that we can share updates with you here.
