Quiz not allowing student to select answer choice in quiz
Hello folks,
I'm hoping someone has had a similar situation and been able to find a solution. I have quizzes that contain multiple choice questions. There have been reports from students that are sometimes unable to select an answer choice. The blue highlight bar that normally appears while hovering over an answer choice does not appear and when clicking on an answer choice it is not selected (i.e. the radio button does not show that it has been selected). Interestingly everything else that can be clicked in the quiz works, including the volume slider, previous and next buttons, and the question list dropdown menu.
The quizzes are delivered via an LMS and are published in QM'13 using SCORM 2004, 4th ed. I don't believe the problem to be a browser issue as I've switched browsers and the same problem occurs.
What's makes this even more difficult to solve is that it only happens intermittently. Most students are able to get through the same quizzes with no problems.
Any ideas? Would you lean towards this problem being caused by the LMS or a glitch in QM'13?
Thanks for any feedback any of you might be able to provide.
Best,
Steven

I am having this same issue with one course in that when the learner selects the response in a multiple choice quiz the radio button does not fill. I just converted from quiz maker 13 to quiz maker 360. In the past I've been able to solve the issue buy editing the quiz or by recreating the quiz. For this particular course neither of these solutions have corrected the problem. I've even tried a free form question; however I am still having the same issue. I've got an ongoing case with Articulate -- Case #01019130; however, no one seems to be able to find a solution to my issue. Has anyone in the community found a resolution? Extremely frustrating as I need to deliver this project to a client and can't do so with the way the multiple response questions are performing.

If you don’t need to support html5, don’t!!!!!
HTML5 is the problem.
Try testing with just flash

Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback. I had forgotten to clear my cache; however, I don't know how to clear the quiz data. I did clear the cache and republish and I am still having the same issue.

Try testing from a different student account. Not sure how you can reset data in your lms

I am publishing to Articulate Online and managing my content from there. At this point I think I am going to need to remove all multiple choice, true false, and multiple response questions from this course. My drag and drop questions are working so I may need to do the response questions as a hot spot.
Thanks again for your help.

We've been able to have users work through the quiz questions for multiple choice only by using the keyboard to make the selections. Use the Tab key to move from one field to the next. You'll see a box highlight different fields in the course (not just the answers) so you may need to tab a handful of times to get to the answer choice. If you pass the answer, Alt-Tab will take you backwards through the sequence. Then, use Space/Enter to select the response and Tab to the Submit button and Space/Enter to Submit. This workaround is a hassle for the students but it at least allows the user to progress and earn a completion. We've not found any 'real' solution.

Thanks Aaron. Glad to see that I am not crazy and that this is a real issue. Hopefully Articulate can find the bug that is causing the issue.

I originally reported this issue 3 years ago and it still happens for users like you. I believe it's an Articulate issue, but clearly nothing is going to be done about it. I tried working with Articulate, but they didn't make it easy and were placing blame on the LMS. Eventually I just gave up. I love the Articulate products, but think that QM is the weak link in the mix, in terms of functionality anyways.
Michele, is your quiz embedded in an Articulate presentation? Or is it a stand-alone quiz?
My guess is that it's an embedded quiz within a presentation. That's where I had the same problem you're having. Ultimately my "fix" to the problem was to pull all of the quizzes out of my presentations and make them all stand-alone quizzes.
I wish you the best because I know exactly what you're going through.

Thanks Steven.
They are embedded in the presentation. The issue began when I upgraded to 360 and then republished the course. The course was originally designed using Presenter & QM 13. I've had this issue with several other courses and was able to resolve by editing the quiz questions. For this particular course nothing is solving the problem. I even recreated the quizzes from scratch - no copying and pasting.
Thanks again for your feedback. I may need to go the stand alone quiz route as when you publish the quiz as a standalone file it does perform as intended.
Best,
Michele

None of you are crazy! It's definitely an issue with Articulate Studio 13. We used to develop in Presenter 09 but now use Studio 13 and also develop in Storyline, Lectora and Captivate. We've not had any issues in the other authoring tools. We also recently changed our LMS from Moodle to ExpertusONE and we've had this experience in both LMSes and only in the Studio 13 courses. The common variable is Studio 13. Hopefully Articulate will reconsider the 'it's the LMS' approach and own this one so they can resolve in Studio 13.

I will update this one last time and remove myself from the updates as they seem to have hit everyone's nerve except articulate. Here is what you need to do to troubleshoot.
1) keep track of which browsers are having the problems and which don't.
2) turn off the html5 ability since QM suffers terribly in html5.
3) make sure all browser have the flash plugin which was turned off this summer in Safari and Firefox making customer support a real headache.
4) make sure that you are following good testing practices when it comes to testing and that you clear browser caches and that you have the ability to wipe out the stored progress data (that is now frustrating unreadable garbage).
5) remember that your QM source file can be corrupted and your only choice is to create a new one and hope that when you import the existing questions that you don't import the corruption.*
6) if its always a specific question then just delete that damned question and rebuild it.
7) if you are using a browser like Chrome to test and you sometime glitch on a specific question and other times you don't, its the QM file (see #5 above).
That's all I can think of. If I could find any other product that deals with PPT source files and handles controlled navigation let me know because I so would like to dump this tool. I have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars due to Articulate and am feeling frustrated and stuck. Studio '13 is a clear nightmare and I haven't seen any indication yet that problems have actually been solved in 360. Your posting doesn't give me any sense of hope.
Good luck, Deb
* Instructions from Articulate that related to QM '13
I'd recommend that you create a new quiz file and then import the questions. Articulate Quizmaker '13 supports importing questions from other quizzes, quiz templates, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and text files. Here's how:

Also, please make sure to save the quiz file locally and the suggested naming conventions for the filename to avoid corruption. Please review the article below:

I am having the same problem with the quiz function. The buttons will not show selected. I recently upgraded to 360 as well. Hello All -
Thanks so much for continuing to share and letting us know about this issue. We do have this logged as a possible software bug. I will be sure to update to reflect the users impacted here as well as providing the link back to update all of you when applicable.
We do try to prioritize items based on user impact. Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed very quickly, while other bugs take longer to resolve. I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry if it’s slowing you down.

This whole thread, especially the part about it dating back to three years ago, is woefully depressing ... I just told my company to drop a grand on 360, and it already can't do something as basic as this ... damn.

I have spent 20 days trying to rectify this with support. There is no
solution. I spend the money out of my own business. Very disappointing.
What I learned on my own is that if you have any kind of free form or drop
and drag AND a MC or TF the MC and TF won't work. If you take the free
form stuff out, the selection does.

I'm using freeform questions to mimic multiple choice questions, and hopefully, that can limp me across this projects finish line.
Spoke too soon, that doesn't work either ... DAMN!
