Canvas no longer supports SCORM output. What is a Storyline output that will work? XAPI?
We have been informed that Canvas (Instructure) LMS will no longer support SCORM. Canvas will allow uploads of SCORM packages but will not support it if issues arise. This is a potential huge issue as all the lessons and interactive content we created in Storyline may no longer be supported. Is Articulate aware of this and looking for alternatives as this would impact continuing usage of Storyline/Articulate 360. Is publishing to XAPI an option? Can it be supported by Canvas. This would also apply to RISE output/content.

Have you checked on the Instructure support pages? It appears it still supports score but it must be enabled.

Hi Cyndi. Canvas/Instructure will still allow you to upload/use basic SCORM, but they will not support it. We use it all the time, it is enabled. Our IT team has made it clear to us that it is not longer supported and we need to look for alternatives as SCORM is considered and older technology now. While we can still use it now, it is going to go away and we don't want to continue to use something that is not supported by the LMS.

Scorm is probably going to be around for a while it maybe you need to look for a different LMS or use an LRS does Canvas accept xAPI?

Yes. But just asking if Articulate plans to offer other alternatives in the future. It is just a question as part of or research to find alternative. Hoping to continue to use Storyline, but if Canvas will not support it we will have to change (again, we really don't want change). Really hopeful that Canvas will support XAPI and then it is a non-issue.

I think Canvas supports LTI which storyline does not. But you could integrate with an external LRS

Thanks for that input Phil. Using an external tool is likely not an option.

Susan, where did you hear about Canvas no longer supporting SCORM? I've asked on the live chat and they claim to know nothing about it?

Hi Dave. Our IT department informed us that this is the case. To be clear, you can still upload SCORM in Canvas. They are not taking that feature away at this point, but it is just "basic SCORM", However, we were told that it is no longer supported and we were told that it will eventually go away because it is older technology. Thus, we need to find an alternative to using SCORM. Would love to know if Canvas will support XAPI (but is it the same LTI problem?) . I posted this to see if we could get more info. Interesting that you asked on the live chat and got that response. What live chat? Can you point me to that source?

Hi Susan. It was just the help chat built into Canvas itself, bottom of the left hand menu.

Instructure's support on Scorm was always minimal. Whenever a user with issues in Scorm contacted Instructure ( Canvas ) the response was to contact the developers of the tool the Scorm was created. So in fact little changes now, only that they even admit they wont support Scorm users. As far as xApi concerns. Canvas has little or no support for xApi in its default elements and interactions. You can add a Storyline or Lectora developed component with xApi that sends the data to a LRS, but all of that acts outside of Canvas.
At our University Instructure Canvas is the main LMS also. We use the Canvas gradebook for quizzes and assesments build on Canvas. When using Scorm ( Storyline and Lectora ) we send data to the gradebook. That works fine. If we need more specific data we use external databases to write that to. - JudithReymon104Community Member
Does anyone know of a workaround? Scorm seemed to be working fine a few weeks ago, but not today!

We are experiencing significant problems with uploads. Either can't upload or it takes a very long time.

How big are your Scorm packages ? The one i tested was 9Mb. Do try with a smaller one...
- RussellGoodrichCommunity Member
Yeah, I'm having the same problem. Scorm packages appeared to upload and then nothing.
Each time after that, they don't even appear to upload. Just nothing!

I just tested a Scorm project ( 2004 ) on our Canvas LMS and it works as it did before. No changes whatsoever. So you might have either a network issue or a local admin has disabled Scorm.

We have the same problem.

I'm getting the same as Math, no issues with existing SCORM resources. I even tried uploading a new SCORM package and it worked fine and reported to the grade book as it should.

It probably is the size and number of SCORM packages. However, we have been doing this successfully for some time, now suddenly a change. There are reported issue "Heavy load" with Canvas and some other issues. Using a smaller SCORM package is really is not a solution, one should not have to adapt design to the technology. Technology should adapt to the design, otherwise creativity is stifled.
