Engage 360: Image Zoom Interactions

The image zoom interaction in Engage 360 lets learners zoom into important parts of an image or diagram. Use the image zoom interaction to:

  • Step through details of an image.
  • Explain significant parts of a graphic.
  • Describe the steps in a process.

Exploring the Editor

The image zoom editor has three columns with the following panels:

Steps

Located on the left side of the screen, this panel is used to manage steps (zoom regions) for your interaction.

Preview

Located at the top of the middle section, this panel is used to arrange steps (zoom regions) on the image.

Text

Located at the bottom of the middle section, this panel is used to add text to each step.

Audio

Located in the upper right corner of the editor, this panel is used to add and edit audio.

Media

Located in the lower right corner, this panel is used to add pictures, characters, and videos.

Here are some tips for working with the editor:

  • Change the width of a column by dragging its boundary with your mouse.
  • Expand the text panel by dragging its top boundary upward if you need more room to work with text.
  • Click the triangle in the upper right corner of the audio panel to collapse it if you need more room to work with the media panel. Click it again to reopen the panel.

Switching to a Different Image

To change the image for your interaction, do the following:

  1. Go to the Image Zoom tab on the ribbon and click Change Image.
  2. Browse to the image you want to use and click Open.

Adding Steps (Zoom Regions) to an Image

Each step in an image zoom interaction is a zoom region on the image. Steps are managed in the Steps panel on the left side of the screen, and they appear as shaded rectangles on the image in the preview panel. To add a step, do any of the following:

  • Press Ctrl+M.
  • Go to the Image Zoom tab on the ribbon and click Add Step.
  • Click the Create a new step button in the lower left corner of the Steps panel.
  • Click the Duplicate button at the bottom of the Steps panel to copy the currently selected step(s).

New steps get added just below the step that's currently selected in the Steps panel—unless the summary is selected, in which case new steps get added above it.

Tip: An image zoom interaction can have up to 100 steps (not counting the introduction and summary).

Renaming Steps (Zoom Regions)

To rename a step, do either of the following:

  • Double-click the step in the Steps panel to open it for editing. Type the new name and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • Select the step in the Steps panel, then type the new name in the title field at the top of the text panel.

Tip: You can rename the introduction or summary in the same way.

Resizing Zoom Regions

Everything in a zoom region will be magnified when learners click it to zoom in. To resize a zoom region, select it in the preview panel to reveal its sizing handles, then drag any of the sizing handles.

Tip: To maintain a zoom region's aspect ratio while you're resizing it, hold down your Shift key and drag one of the corner sizing handles.

Rearranging Steps (Zoom Regions)

There are two aspects to arranging steps (zoom regions): layering and spatial layout.

Layering refers to how zoom regions behave when they overlap on the image (three-dimensional arrangement).

Spatial layout refers to how zoom regions are distributed across the image (two-dimensional arrangement).

Layering:

Layering is controlled by the order of steps in the Steps panel. The first step in the list is the bottommost zoom region on the image. The last step in the list is the topmost zoom region on the board. When learners click an area where two zoom regions overlap, the topmost zoom region is the one that will open (i.e., the step farthest down the list in the Steps panel).

To change the layer order, select one or more steps in the Steps panel, then do any of the following:

  • Drag them to a new location in the list. An orange line will move with your mouse to indicate where the steps will be dropped when your mouse button is released.
  • Go to the Image Zoom tab on the ribbon, click Move Step, then select Up or Down.
  • Use the Up and Down arrows at the bottom of the Steps panel.

The order of steps in the Steps panel also determines their sequential order when learners use the previous and next buttons on the player to navigate through your interaction.

Spatial Layout:

Spatial layout is easy to control. Simply drag zoom regions to a new location in the preview panel.

Tip: Use the arrow keys on your keyboard for more precise placement. Hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the arrows keys for even tighter control.

Changing the Outline Color of Zoom Regions

To change the color used for the dashed outline on a zoom region, do the following:

  1. Select a step (zoom region).
  2. Go to the Image Zoom tab on the ribbon and click Color.
  3. Choose one of the predefined colors, or click More Colors at the bottom of the drop-down and specify a custom color.

Deleting Steps

To delete a step, do any of the following:

  • Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  • Go to the Image Zoom tab on the ribbon and click Delete Step.
  • Click the Delete button at the bottom of the Steps panel.

Tip: You can't delete the introduction or summary, but you can hide them.
