Draggable Spotlights in E-Learning #447: Challenge | Recap

This week, we’re looking at a super cool way to create explore-type activities. Inspired by a recent example from Paul Alders, we’re looking at using draggable objects – think of a magnifying glass or a spotlight – and use them to explore specific parts of an image.

Why is this interesting?

When you think about drag-and-drop, it's usually associated with sorting or sequencing interactions that mimic real-world actions. You know, like moving an object and dropping it onto a designated target. Pretty standard stuff, right?

But in this particular example, Paul’s doing something a bit different. 

The drag object isn't meant to be dropped onto any specific target. Instead, it's used to explore the slide and uncover hidden areas that trigger click events. Essentially, the act of dragging becomes a tool to uncover these clickable targets.

Now, let's talk about the masking effect.

How does it work?

There are various approaches you can take here. You could use external software like PowerPoint to create a hole-punch effect for your spotlight mask. And for 360 purists, you can even do it all right within Storyline 360 using the donut and frame shapes.

🏆 Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to show how a spotlight or masking effect can be used in explore-type activities.

You can go classic with drag objects for your spotlight effect. But if you're new to Storyline 360 or want to try something different, try using sliders, dials, or click-and-reveal interactions to reveal areas of an image.

For example, try using the labeled graphic block with a semi-transparent image, and add markers that, when clicked, magnify or highlight different parts of that image.

    Hello.

    This took me awhile to figure out - I wanted the activity to be as clean and simple as possible. I also wanted to create an encouraging Pop-Up window (One more "issue" to find) after they found the third item - maybe that will be in Version 2 lol.

    Also side note: I created the sample in Storyline 360 Beta.
  • I'd love to have a go at this as I have a project that I'm working on where this would be perfect. But I have no idea how to start this as I'd like the spotlight to be more of a magnifier that zooms in! Can anyone point me in the direction of some tutorials on this please?

      Hi Nadia

      I think you could achieve something close in Storyline 360 Beta. It has a new Emphasis animation. One of the animation options is zoom.


      You could create or crop the zoom area (part of the image) to its needed size and lay it on top of its matching background. This top element is "invisible" to the naked eye.


      Next, add a trigger such as Emphasize with Zoom when learner hovers or drags item (magnifying glass labeled "Drag") over "Zoom Area".


      I tried something similar last night when I was playing around.


      If you aren't able to switch to beta, you can create this effect manually in Storyline 360. Instead of the new animation (Emphasis), you would create the Zoom effect on a separate layer by adding the "Entrance Zoom" animation to the state of the cropped element. Then add a "Change State to Zoomed" when item (Drag item) hovers over (Zoomed Area) which is the cropped element.

  • I love this weeks challenge.

    The example from Paul Alders is having the same issue that I'm getting. When I'm dragging an object and if I drop it on the same spot as one of my hotspots, the object is stuck.

    Any ideas,

    Found it - Don't have hotspots on a different layer. Also have the object that the learner can drag at the front.

      Hi Andy. I think there is a JavaScript solution, but I found another way you can see in my sample above. What I did is I created "boundaries" that are narrow rectangular hotspots way off the slide on all four sides. I then created motion paths for the masking object that move it back to the center. So, when the object intersects the boundaries, there is a trigger that tells SL to move the object on a motion path back to the center of the slide. For example "When Object intersects the left boundary, move Object along the move right motion path". Hopefully this makes sense and it helpful!

      Hi Andy,

      Another SL user reached out to me with the same issue.

      Luckily there is another quick solution. Transform your slide into a freeform drag and drop question, set the flashlight img as a drag item and delete the correct and incorrect layer. With this turnaround your interaction is working perfectly!

    Thank you for a great challenge, and a special thanks to Paul for the fantastic template! Here is my submission: Earthquake Office Emergency challenge. Find 10 useful items or hazards after an earthquake hits your office! I used Adobe Firefly for the scene creation. Although it performed really well, I did encounter some difficulties in achieving high quality in close-up shots.
