With International Women's Day (March 8) a week away, it felt like a good time to incorporate it into a ELH challenge.
Note: I used lightboxes a couple different ways - including an image gallery and that design is totally inspired by Jodi's french bulldog gallery. I had never considered using a lightbox like this before and I enjoyed building it! Thanks for the idea, Jodi!

- DanSweigert4 years agoCommunity MemberCarrie, very cool. There were two series on PBS which you can watch on their website about women's suffrage, one called "The Vote" and another based on Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's efforts to the get the vote. The former is a little happier to watch because it actually ends with women getting the vote during the Wilson administration.

- SaraWildman-9994 years agoCommunity MemberHi Carrie, I love the idea and the amount of information you included. The links to outside sources add to it nicely. I have a question that maybe you or someone else can chime in on: How do you decide if you need instructions on your slides. For ex: "Click on the underlined words to find out more". Or "Move the slider to reveal information on each person." I tend to include directions too often, I think.
Thanks!- carrietmills4 years agoCommunity MemberSara, that's a great question that I often struggle with when I'm designing. In creating this example, I opted not to include directions in different spots for different reasons.
In a couple places, I omitted directions because I had hoped that the design was intuitive - like, click the numbers to reveal the timeline or clicking each major figure's portrait to learn more. In those instances, I certainly could have (and perhaps should have?) added directions, but omitted for the aesthetics.
With the underlined names in the timeline, I omitted directions to click on the names because it wasn't essential to the step - certainly, I included the capability if someone experiencing it wanted an immediate biography, but I consider it auxiliary to the timeline itself (kinda like having a term hyperlinked to open its definition in a glossary - not essential, but a nice touch if it's needed.)
Certainly a great discussion topic.- SaraWildman-9994 years agoCommunity MemberI always want to omit them for aesthetics, too! I did a quick search in the community posts, and there are a lot of good discussions! This one had good points and links to other sources. https://community.articulate.com/articles/3-subtle-ways-to-integrate-navigation-instructions
It really will depends on who the target audience is.
- JacobBroadhead4 years agoCommunity MemberI really enjoyed the layout, the information, and the colors. I particularly enjoyed the different pictures of the women that appear one at a time overlapping in the beginning.
Things I noticed:
The lightboxes have two exit buttons. A custom one and the original.
The title slides in really fast
On the major figures slide, Kate Duncker does not have a name under her picture- carrietmills4 years agoCommunity MemberJacob, thanks for the feedback! Solid points.
You're definitely right about the double exit buttons. One is generated through the feature in Storyline, and the other is one I added myself. I saw Philippe's note below on the Javascript to remove the automatic exit, so I'm excited to try that in the future.
Good call on the speed of the title slides - I see what you mean.
I'm having trouble replicating the error on Käte Duncker's name tag - may very well be a lag issue from my cloud storage provider. :0
Seriously, thanks for taking the time to review and provide feedback. I appreciate it.- JacobBroadhead4 years agoCommunity MemberSure. I try to think of things I like about every project and specifically some things I would hope someone would catch on projects I create - even if it is just an opinion. I don't know how else we improve without some objective criticism or wondering. The javascript idea is great. I'm going to have to study that one.
