Hands up if you have never heard of ‘Wimmelbilder’?
They are made up of the two German words ‘Wimmeln’ – meaning teeming or swarming and ‘Bilder’, meaning pictures. So, they are pictures ‘teeming’ with detail. Where’s Waldo books are an example of Wimmelbilder that will be familiar to most of you. A few months ago, I came across the wonderful work of Doro Goebel and Peter Knorr and was enchanted. Their draughtsmanship and technical brilliance are coupled to a rich and humorous depiction of humanity in an idyllic urban setting. My concept (not yet complete) is to take their rich tapestry and try to apply to it some of the magic of Storyline. It’s a long project – I’ve just started with one character. There are around thirty to go!
